From self-doubt to certified: How Nancy Burkard, CCE, took charge of her career
Business-to-business (B2B) credit management is a dynamic field shaped by ongoing economic and industry shifts. These changes demand that credit professionals stay sharp and proactive. Through NACM and FCIB’s six Professional Certification Programs, credit professionals gain the knowledge and skills needed to confidently navigate risks and drive strategic decision-making.
For Nancy Burkard, CCE, senior credit manager at TD SYNNEX (Greenville, SC), earning her Certified Credit Executive (CCE) designation was a deliberate career move that helped her take a more active role in risk management. “The experience made me well-qualified for the job,” Burkard said. “But what was more satisfying was realizing that I could organize the information in a way that helped me pass the final exam. It showed me that I had what I needed to present the material clearly, concisely and effectively.”
Before beginning her journey, Burkard completed the NACM Career Roadmap, outlining points earned through education, work experience, NACM involvement and related professional activities. The Career Roadmap helps candidates evaluate and document their accomplishments. To qualify for the CCE designation, candidates must earn 125 total points, which Burkard achieved.
Even with the qualifications in place, self-doubt remained a challenge. “Like many people, I underestimated my capabilities and struggled with test anxiety,” Burkard said. “While studying for the certification, I realized I knew a lot more than I thought I did.”
To prepare for the final exam, Burkard used NACM’s CCE Exam Study Guide, which includes suggested topics, recommended reading and a practice test. “Taking detailed notes on each segment of the study guide helped me retain information and understand the material more deeply,” she said. “I took the practice test included in the guide a few days before the exam, which helped me structure my answers and reduce anxiety.”
With focused preparation, a strong support system and determination, Burkard passed the final exam. She credits her manager and president of the company, Ben Baab, for encouraging her to pursue certification. “He was very supportive and helpful throughout the process, and I really appreciated that,” said Burkard.
Burkard also pointed to broader support within her organization. “Our senior vice president, Jay Snyder, is passionate about the Professional Certification Program and is even teaching accounting classes for us because so many people want to go through the programs,” Burkard said. “The positive reactions from my peers, especially those who already have their CCE, gave me the external validation I needed to keep going.”
For credit professionals considering certification, Burkard emphasizes trusting yourself. “You are the expert so don’t let hesitation hold you back,” she said. “Even if you don’t pass the first time, it’s not the end of the road, you can always try again.”
📚Study tips: Create a study schedule and keep a daily journal to reflect and recharge. “At the end of each day, I write or draw in my journal,” Burkard said. “It helps me organize my thoughts, see the bigger picture, and refocus after a long day of working and studying.”
