Mastering the Art and Science of Credit Management with Certifications
The credit management profession is often described as both an art and a science. It requires a combination of hard, technical skills—such as financial analysis and business credit law—as well as soft skills, like relationship-building and effective communication. By earning a designation through NACM’s six-level Professional Certification Program, credit professionals can sharpen both skill sets while gaining valuable knowledge across various facets of B2B credit.
Jessica Castilleja, CBA, accountant at Great Northwest Transport LLC (Pasco, WA), earned her Credit Business Associate (CBA) designation to gain knowledge and increase her confidence in the credit aspect of her career.
“The journey itself was fun since classes were filled with unique individuals making the learning experience interesting,” Castilleja said. “The instructors were down to earth and had lots of good tips and tricks they’ve learned over the years. The biggest challenge was actually motivating myself to get on the zoom calls after a full day’s work, but once I was on, the time went fast.”
Not only is Castilleja proud of her accomplishment, but she is grateful for what she learned in the process. “I learned a ton about credit and that I can do hard things,” she said. “I also learned that I need to be more forgiving and rewarding to myself.”
💡Study Tips: When studying, try to be in the right headspace, location and atmosphere. “I am a sun person so sitting at my dining room table with the sun shining on me and listening to good music sets the tone for me,” Castilleja said.
Take frequent breaks. “When I start to feel overwhelmed or distracted to where I can’t focus, I’d take a walk, eat a snack and step away for a bit and regroup,” said Castilleja.
