Power in the principles: Strengthening credit through certification

One of the hallmarks of a strong credit manager is a commitment to keep learning and improving themselves professionally. Earning a designation through one of NACM and FCIB’s six Professional Certification Programs is one way credit managers can advance in their careers.
Brittany Wojack, CBA, credit manager at Southern Pipe and Supply (Tuscaloosa, AL), saw earning her Credit Business Associate (CBA) designation as an opportunity to strengthen her foundation in credit to help her best serve her company.
“Having worked in credit for many years, I saw this as an opportunity to formalize my experience with structured knowledge and best practices recognized across the industry,” Wojack said. “More than anything, I want to be as successful and knowledgeable in my field as I can be.”
Professional certification programs are an opportunity to solidify your understanding of business credit professionals while you hone in on the foundations of the field, recentering your workflow to work efficiently and effectively.
“Working toward the CBA certification reinforced the importance of foundational credit principles that sometimes get overlooked in the day-to-day,” Wojack said. “It reminded me how critical it is to understand not just the ‘what,’ but the ‘why’ behind credit decisions. On a personal level, I was reminded how much I enjoy learning and how capable I am when I push myself outside of my comfort zone.”
Pursuing a professional certification is a challenge worth taking on, as it reaffirms your commitment to improving yourself within the field of business credit. Wojack had not taken any classes or sat for any exams before starting the course, but the excitement over earning her CBA overpowered any nerves.
“I actually started this journey before my grandfather passed away, and he was always asking about my progress and following up after each course and every test—especially during the accounting course,” Wojack said. “I know he was proud of me for pursuing it, and knowing he would be proud that I completed it makes the accomplishment even more meaningful.”
📝Study tip: Before you dive straight into cramming, consider all the information you need to review and create a plan that prioritizes the areas where you feel less confident.
“For the CBA exam, since there was so much material, I found it helpful to start with the practice test to see where I needed to focus,” Wojack said. “From there, I dove deeper into those specific areas. I did go through the exam review course and made sure to complete all the practice tests, which I believe helped more than anything.”
