Make professional strides with the CBA

While discussing her next career move with her boss, Kristen Gibson, CBA, learned about the Credit Business Associate (CBA) designation through NACM and FCIB’s Professional Certification Program. “He recommended the CBA course to me and together we made a plan to move forward,” she said.

Progression in any career requires careful, strategic thinking. You must ask yourself: Do I want to develop a new skill, increase my knowledge or secure a higher position? If so, what steps should I take to achieve these goals? This was exactly the case for Kristen Gibson, CBA, revenue risk credit analyst at Carrier Enterprise (Syracuse, NY), just a few years ago.

While discussing her next career move with her boss, Gibson learned about the Credit Business Associate (CBA) designation through NACM and FCIB’s Professional Certification Program. “He recommended the CBA course to me and together we made a plan to move forward,” she said.

After earning her CBA, Gibson gained a deeper understanding of credit—and a bit more about herself. “Credit is a broader career path than I originally thought, and it varies depending on where you are in the world,” Gibson said. “I also discovered that I am smarter and more adaptable than I believed.”

Despite a busy schedule, Gibson remained committed to earning her designation. “I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree while working a full-time and a part-time job when I started the classes,” she said. “There were times I didn’t think I was going to make it through, but I’m glad to have passed all three classes and final exam.”

Today, Gibson is a college graduate with her first professional certification under her belt. “If you’re scared of taking the next step, take it anyway,” she said. “I’m grateful for my boss, Henley Rowe-Anderson, CCE, CICP, who encouraged me to pursue my designation and who has been a great mentor for me. I am where I am today in my career because of his help and knowledge.”

✏️Study tips: Read the course books, take good notes and don’t be afraid to ask classmates for help. “I’d recommend taking the class with Marlene Groh, CCE, ICCE, who is very knowledgeable and always willing to help.”

Take time to relax and decompress when possible. “If I started to feel overwhelmed, I would take a step back and do something that wasn’t work or school related,” Gibson said. “That way, I’d come back feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the next challenge.”
