Investing in growth: How continuing education can elevate a credit career

Melissa Monroe, CBA, accounts receivable lead at Team Fishel (Columbus, OH), took this to heart. Encouraged by her manager, Monroe enrolled in NACM and FCIB’s Professional Certification Program and recently earned her Credit Business Associate (CBA), a milestone she describes as both fulfilling and empowering.

In the ever-evolving world of finance, it’s essential for credit professionals to continue their education to stay current, enhance their skills and advance their careers. The more knowledge professionals gain, the more value they bring to their organizations and the industry at large.

“I believe getting the CBA is worth it and important for furthering your credit career,” Monroe said. “The knowledge you attain is definitely worth it, no matter which industry you’re in.”

The CBA designation is the first of the six designations in the certification program. It reflects mastery in three key areas of business credit: basic financial accounting, business credit principles and introductory financial statement analysis. These foundational concepts are vital for anyone entering the credit field or working toward professional development.

While the courses were challenging, Monroe embraced the learning experience. “I did a lot of studying, and I learned that, even at 49, I still had it in me to focus and learn,” Monroe said. “At first, I thought my learning days were behind me, but once I got started, I realized I still had it.”

After hearing that she passed the exam, Monroe was both relieved and thrilled. “It feels amazing to have a professional certification after my name,” Monroe said. “Not only has it boosted my earning potential, but it’s also given me access to opportunities I didn’t have before.”

✏️Study Tips: Studying is more than reading flashcards and taking detailed notes. “While studying for the exam, you really have to focus on critical thinking skills and not let yourself get overwhelmed,” Monroe said. “You got this!”
