Years of Impact: A Credit Career Shaped by NACM

In this special member spotlight, we’re highlighting Heather Re-DeGunia, CBF, CCRA, senior credit representative at Ag Processing, Inc. (Omaha, NE). As her retirement approaches, she reflects on a distinguished credit career, the lessons learned along the way and the lasting impact of NACM.

Every professional’s path into credit is different, but those who truly stand out share a common thread: a deep respect for their craft and the positive influences that shaped their journey. In this special member spotlight, we’re highlighting Heather Re-DeGunia, CBFCCRA, senior credit representative at Ag Processing, Inc. (Omaha, NE). As her retirement approaches, she reflects on a distinguished credit career, the lessons learned along the way and the lasting impact of NACM.

How did you originally find your path into a career in credit?

“Before I secured a credit position, I was a loan administrator for 15 years at a finance company managed by my current company, Ag Processing. In 2012, my then boss retired and the company wanted to sell the finance company. In order to stay at Ag Processing, they found a position for me as a credit representative in the credit department, which was new territory.”

How did you first get involved with NACM, and how has that experience influenced your career?

“I first got involved with NACM at the encouragement of my current boss, Chad, who recognized the value of NACM’s education programs and the opportunities they provide for professional growth. After attending my first sessions, I quickly saw why NACM is so highly regarded. Its resources, networking opportunities and focus on industry best practices were exactly what I needed to continue developing in my role as a credit leader. Engaging with a supportive community of credit professionals motivated me to stay engaged and continue expanding my involvement with NACM.”

What has made a career in credit so meaningful and fulfilling for you?

“I’ve grown immensely from being in credit management. I’ve strengthened key skills, like reviewing financial data more effectively or improving communications with sales and other departments. Because every account is unique, I find the work both challenging and rewarding.”

What do you consider your greatest accomplishments in the field and why?

“My greatest accomplishment is learning how to read and understand financial statements, make confident credit decisions and develop a strong understanding of accounts and risks. Credit can be challenging, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come in developing the judgment and communication skills that my role requires.”

Re-DeGunia encourages credit professionals to take full advantage of NACM’s programs and designation opportunities. In 2018, she earned her Certified Credit and Risk Analyst (CCRA) designation, one of the six prestigious certifications from NACM and FCIB’s Professional Certification Program. As a CCRA holder, Re-DeGunia has gained the credibility and confidence to make more informed credit decisions and contribute meaningfully to the credit profession.

Following her accreditation, Re-DeGunia was honored with the CCRA Designation of Excellence Award from NACM’s National Honors and Awards Program. This recognition is awarded to designation holders at four distinct levels—CBACBFCCRA and CCE—who demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence through continuous learning and a passion for sharing knowledge by speaking, teaching or mentoring.

“In addition to gaining valuable knowledge, you have the opportunity to meet so many other credit professionals who can offer their advice and expertise to help you in your career,” Re-DeGunia said.

What key lessons have you learned as a credit professional, and how have those lessons helped you grow in your career?

“I’ve learned how important collaboration is in credit. Working closely with sales and management has given me a clear view of how everything connects behind the scenes, and it helps me to understand the bigger picture and make decisions that support more than just my role, they support the entire business.”

What are your plans for this next chapter of your life?

“This new stage is about finding a balance between purpose and enjoying life with the people that matter most. I plan to stay active, give back and be a part of the local school district as a paraprofessional in early childhood and middle school education. As of December, I’ve earned two certificates through the Nebraska Department of Education and am learning more on my own. Working in education will give me more flexibility to spend time with family and travel.”
