Turning dreams into reality: A credit professional’s certification journey
The road of a credit professional’s career can be a bumpy one—with twists and turns that can leave them off balance. That said, ongoing education provides the knowledge and skills needed to navigate challenges and stay on course toward long-term success.
After earning her bachelor’s in business administration and international business in 2008, Jennifer LeMaster, CBA, CICP, AR and credit supervisor for Lhoist North America (Fort Worth, TX), decided to return to the classroom to further enhance her credit expertise by earning her certifications through NACM and FCIB’s Professional Certification Program. “I was nervous as to whether I could do a full-time job, lead my credit and collections team and earn two designations simultaneously,” LeMaster said. “Instead of asking ‘What if,’ I set the goal and put my mind to it.”
LeMaster first heard of the program in November 2022 upon joining her current company. She gained a deeper understanding of the program’s value by participating in monthly credit group discussions and attending her first All South Credit Conference in New Orleans in 2024. After winning a raffle contest, LeMaster got the chance to attend her first course on the way to earning the Credit Business Associate (CBA).
LeMaster’s certification journey was a challenging experience, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. In fact, while she was pursuing her CBA, she was also earning the Certified International Credit Professional (CICP). “I promised myself that by July 2025, I would earn two designations, and I’m excited to say I did just that,” LeMaster said.
Earning the CBA designation helped her understand the importance of professional growth and embracing learning opportunities while adding value to her role as a credit professional. “I am able to train my team in areas of credit that they might not be well versed in and answer questions they may have,” said LeMaster. “I feel that earning my designations has made me a valuable asset to the company and I’m able to share more insights and knowledge surrounding the credit world.”
Beyond expanding her knowledge and abilities, LeMaster forged lasting connections with her peers. “A small group of us formed a study group and stayed in touch during the months between classes and leading to the final CBA exam,” LeMaster said. “Before taking the exam, we reassured each other and, in the end, celebrated the huge success that we all had passed and earned our designations. By the end, we were almost like family.”
LeMaster attributes her success in completing the program to NACM Southwest and her instructor Toni Drake, who dedicated herself to making the classes interesting and enjoyable. “She devoted so much time to answering our questions and building our confidence in ourselves,” said LeMaster. “On top of helping me learn some new accounting techniques, she inspired me to earn additional designations beyond just the CBA.”
📒Study Tips: Match up with a study partner or study group. “Having our study group helped me so much,” said LeMaster. “When someone wasn’t completely clear about something we were all able to help each other. Take lots of notes, don’t be afraid to ask questions till you get it. Also, flash cards are your best friend. As you embark on the journey, stay confident and know that you can do this!”
